Time-In on the Interactive Floor

Calm and Regulation in the Open Air

In a busy classroom, it can sometimes be difficult for children to stay focused. Overstimulation is becoming more and more common, especially in children with a sensitive nervous system. Fresh air and movement can then mean a lot. Whereas the traditional time-out removes a child from the situation to “think,” more and more schools are choosing a different approach: the time-in. A place where children can calm down under guidance.

At Apollios, we see that our interactive floor is surprisingly well suited for this purpose. What started as a playful learning tool is now developing into a versatile aid: a learning floor, a play floor, and a time-in tool. Depending on the moment and the need, the floor can be used flexibly.

From Overstimulation to Reconnection

A child who is overstimulated does not always benefit from isolation or sitting still. Offering soft visual stimuli and targeted movement can help calm the nervous system. The Apollios floor offers a safe, clearly defined play space where children can “land” back in their bodies in a short session.

The floor responds to movement, giving the child direct and understandable feedback:

  • The projections are calming and structured – no loud colors or chaos.
  • The activity takes place outdoors, which in itself already helps reduce

The result? Children regain their balance and can then rejoin the class.

Who Is the Time-In For?

The time-in approach with the interactive floor works particularly well for, among others:

  • children with ASD or ADHD who are sensitive to stimuli;
  • students with trauma or attachment problems;
  • children who are in a build-up of tension;
  • and actually: any child who needs to regulate for a moment in order to move on.

Sometimes ten minutes is enough.

How Does It Work in Practice?

A supervisor (teacher, teaching assistant, or special needs coordinator) offers the child a short session, often following a fixed pattern: stand at the edge of the floor, move, finish. Due to the simple operation, the child can quickly do this independently and no supervision is needed afterwards.

It is not referred to as “pause” or “cooling down,” but as “a moment for yourself” or “a reset for your head and body.” Positive language, positive experience.

A Valuable Extension of What Technology Can Mean in Education

  • Fewer escalations in the classroom.
  • Children get back to learning more quickly.
  • Contributes to a school climate where emotional safety is central.

The Apollios floor is therefore not only an investment in technology, but also in the well-being, inclusion, and resilience of students.

From play floor to learning floor to time-in: one solution, three powerful applications.

A small change, with a big impact on the daily school climate.
