FAQ
Take a look at the following frequently asked questions about the Solar Playground and the Solar Walkway, still have questions? Send us an email.
General information
The Solar Playground is the name we have given to our solar energy floor modules. We named it The Solar Playground because it is built outside in areas where the public can play on them and interact with through games or data visualisation.
Typically, a Solar Playground installation is categorised under our work in smart cities and smart buildings. See more on The Walkway webpages.
Typically, a playground installation at a school in the Netherlands will cost around ***** EURO, excluding vat. But there is funding available for a lot of Dutch schools. The floor is a permanent installation and will last up to 10 years and becomes carbon-neutral after 5 years. New games are developed and can be installed on the floor throughout its lifetime.
The price can vary for smart city innovations that want to use our solar energy modules for larger public areas. This includes size of the floor and any customisations. Pricing also needs to take into account international locations. Sending equipment from Rotterdam is easy, but logistics must be factored in.
Note that all our Playground installations are permanent and will last a minimum of 10 years before they need to be updated.
No. Although both products are designed and built with solar floor modules, The Solar Playground is exclusively for outdoor educational spaces, namely school yards and public parks.
Solar Playground Floors are programmed with games for children to play, aged 5 – 12 years old.
The Solar Walkway is designed for urban planning and smart cities. It can be programmed with data of the client’s choice such as energy production, footfall or additional lighting.
Our Solar Walkways cater to the smart city industry where tech meets innovation. They can be installed on any outdoor public space that benefits from direct sunlight.
For example, we have installed The Solar Walkway outside train stations, shopping centres and in car parks. Other ideas include sidewalks, rooftop gardens and public parks.

Technical information
The total amount of energy generated depends on a number of factors. For example, how many modules you install, as well as the exposure to the sun.
Our solar energy floor modules generate energy from the sun through integrated PV panels and feeds it back into the grid. These solar tiles produce up to 100 Watt per square meter and have around 70% efficiency.
All components are sustainably manufactured. The main components consist of photovoltaics in glass top layers. The foundation is made of recycled plastics and rubber where possible. Some components require new components.
The modules are placed individually on or within an existing floor.
The modules are all connected to a central control unit that gathers all the energy and data. In the controller our clients decide how the energy and data is used.
Installation and disassembly usually takes no more than a few hours. However, for larger projects, installation could take a couple of days.
We send a minimum of one engineer to install the floors. And depending on the scale of the project, this could be an entire team.
Each floor module measures: 600 x 600 x 122mm.
Each floor module weighs 19kg.
More information can be found in The Solar Playground Brochure.
When the floor is connected to the server we can remotely turn the floor off, dont turn the floor off by using the power switch in the utility box because this will cause problems.
